Hair Removal and Skin Treatment With Lasers

By Morgana Reichel

There are two primary uses for lasers in cosmetic procedures: hair removal and skin treatment.

Laser Hair Removal

Hair in unwanted places is a hassle, and you might feel self-conscious about your appearance because of it. To remove unwanted hair, and keep it off, laser hair removal is easy, long-lasting, and virtually painless.

The process is fairly simple. A laser emits a high energy beam of light that is absorbed by the hair follicle. The hair follicle is treated just long enough, so as to not damage the surrounding skin, with laser pulses that last only a fraction of a second. The laser light energy is transformed into heat once absorbed, this destroys the hair bulb at the base of the hair follicle.

Your hair colour depends on a pigment called melanin, which is produced by melanocytes, and is found in the hair bulb. This melanin pigment is the target for the laser energy in laser hair removal. Thus the more melanin an individual has in his/her hair, the more effective a laser's energy will be absorbed into the follicle and the better the results will be.

Although the treatment effectively slows hair growth, it doesn't guarantee permanent hair removal. To provide relief from unwanted hair, it typically takes several treatments. As well, periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.

Hair removal treatments safely remove body hair without damaging the surrounding lighter skin with the laser.

The procedure is generally painless. Some slight discomfort-often compared to a rubber band against the skin-may occur, and soreness or tenderness may also accompany the healing process, but these symptoms are very minor and curable.

Laser hair removal is great because it offers long-term results. It may take several treatment sessions to completely rid yourself of unwanted hair, but once it is gone, in most cases, the effect will last. Besides, it is easy to treat any new hair growth.

Laser Skin Treatments

In contrast to hair removal, skin treatments involving lasers go beyond the upper layer of skin (epidermis) and targets below the second layer (dermis). Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most popular types of laser skin treatment. With a laser, layers of damaged skin are gently removed so healthy skin can form in its place.

Even out skin tone, and reduce signs of aging, such as highly-visible veins, wrinkles, and blotchiness via laser skin treatments.

Building healthy new tissue underneath the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin is achieved with another type of laser skin treatment. The healthy tissue will reduce sagging skin and wrinkles, in no time at all, by repairing the elasticity and tightness that your skin once had.

The actual laser skin treatment is rarely painful. And, in most cases, the healing pain is minimal. After a resurfacing session, your face will probably be red and a bit swollen. This should go away in less than a week. Immediately after leaving the clinic, you can return to your normal life. You may require a few procedures to get the results you want with laser skin treatment; the results might not be noticeable right away, but by the end of your sessions, you should notice changes in your skin.
